These terms are the agreement between you and Tom Curnow, a sole trader based in the United Kingdom, who makes and runs Slate. By creating an account or using the app you accept them. If you do not, please do not use Slate.
You must be at least 13 years old, and older if the law where you live sets a higher age for services like this one. Your account is yours alone: keep your sign-in details to yourself, and tell me at hello@slate-app.com if you think someone else has got into it. You can also use Slate without an account, as a guest; a guest's library is private to them, and an inactive guest account may be deleted (see the Privacy Policy).
Your reviews, journal entries, photos, collections, and everything else you write belong to you. To show them to the people you choose, you give me a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, copy, and display that content inside Slate — nothing more. The licence lasts only as long as the content does: delete it, and it ends, apart from copies sitting in backups until they are overwritten.
You are responsible for what you post, and by posting it you confirm you have the right to. Do not upload photos of other people who would not want them shared, and do not post material you do not own the rights to.
Slate's Community Guidelines, in the app under Settings → Community Guidelines, form part of these terms. In short, there is no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive behaviour. Do not:
Every post, comment, and profile can be reported from inside the app, and you can block anyone at any time. Reports are reviewed and acted on within 24 hours: objectionable content is removed and the account behind it can be suspended or closed. Content that several people report may be hidden automatically while it is reviewed.
I can remove content, restrict features, or close an account that breaks these terms, and will tell you why unless doing so would get in the way of an investigation or put someone at risk. None of this means I read everything posted on Slate, or promise to catch everything. Report anything you think crosses a line to hello@slate-app.com.
Titles, posters, cast lists, and descriptions come from The Movie Database. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB. That material belongs to TMDB and its contributors, and is provided for personal use inside Slate.
Slate is licensed to you, not sold. You may use it on devices you own or control, for your own personal, non-commercial use. Features come and go as the app develops, and Slate may be unavailable from time to time for maintenance or reasons outside my control. If Slate is ever discontinued, you will get reasonable notice and a chance to export or delete your data.
This agreement is between you and me, not Apple, and Apple is not responsible for Slate or its content. Apple has no obligation to provide any support for Slate. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
Slate is provided as it is. I do not promise it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will suit any particular purpose, and I do not guarantee the accuracy of information supplied by TMDB or posted by other members.
Nothing here limits my liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow to be limited. If you are a consumer, nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights. Otherwise, I am not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for lost data or profit, and my total liability is limited to what you have paid to use Slate in the previous twelve months.
You can leave whenever you like: delete your account in Settings → Account → Delete Account, which removes your content immediately. I can suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, or close down Slate entirely with reasonable notice. Sections 2, 5, 8, and 10 survive the end of this agreement.
If these terms change, the date at the top changes and anything significant is flagged in the app before it takes effect. Carrying on using Slate afterwards means you accept the new version.
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes go to the courts of England and Wales. If you are a consumer living elsewhere in the UK or the EEA, you keep the protection of your own country's mandatory consumer law and can bring a claim in your local courts.
